Curriculum & program design

Design curriculum that connects identity, community, experience, and impact.

Authentic Learning Lab helps institutions create curriculum and programs that preserve disciplinary rigor while making room for agency, relationships, real context, consequential feedback, and meaningful contribution.

What we can design together

  • New school, program, or course architecture
  • Interdisciplinary and place-based curriculum
  • Competency and durable-skills frameworks
  • Authentic assessment and exhibitions of learning
  • Community-connected learning models
  • Project and experience design
  • Curriculum audits through the Four Dimensions
  • Educator guides, implementation tools, and model units
  • Pilot design, feedback, revision, and scaling plans

Rigor beyond recall

Knowledge matters because of what learners can do with it.

Content remains essential. Learners need explicit instruction, vocabulary, practice, disciplinary knowledge, and technical skill. The question is where learning goes next.

Well-designed authentic learning asks students to transfer understanding, work within constraints, make decisions, defend choices, receive feedback, revise assumptions, and create something that matters to themselves or others.

Designed through the Four Dimensions

01

Self

Where will learners exercise agency, connect learning to identity, discover strengths, and develop an emerging sense of purpose?

02

Connection

Which relationships, perspectives, communities, cultures, experts, and places belong in the learning?

03

Experiences

What will learners investigate, create, practice, test, perform, revise, or decide? Where will they encounter genuine complexity and feedback?

04

Impact

What internal growth or external contribution should become possible? What evidence will help learners and educators recognize it?

A practical engagement arc

01

Define the outcome

What should learners, educators, and the institution be able to do or experience differently?

02

Understand the context

Review current curriculum, constraints, culture, people, partnerships, and implementation conditions.

03

Design the architecture

Establish the learning model, sequence, assessments, experiences, roles, and supports.

04

Build and prototype

Develop usable materials and test them with the people who will carry the work.

05

Learn and revise

Gather evidence, respond to reality, and strengthen the design.

06

Prepare for implementation

Build educator capacity, leadership alignment, and a realistic path forward.

Built with you, built for use

This is not off-the-shelf curriculum with a new logo. Nor is it a strategy document that cannot survive contact with a classroom. The work is co-designed with the people who understand the community and constructed to be taught, tested, and improved.

Bring us the desired outcome, the real constraints, and the unfinished idea.

We will help determine whether the work calls for a focused audit, a design sprint, a pilot, or a deeper curriculum partnership.
