Frequently asked questions

Questions we hear most often.

Short, honest answers about authentic learning, the Four Dimensions, and how we work.

Is authentic learning the same as project-based learning?

No. Project-based learning is one powerful vehicle for authentic learning, but the terms are not interchangeable. A project can include inquiry, student choice, and a public product while remaining largely inside a school-created simulation. Authentic Learning Lab asks how identity, relationships, real context, genuine application, consequential feedback, and purpose become part of the learning.

Do students still need explicit teaching and content instruction?

Yes. Learners often need explicit instruction, vocabulary, foundational concepts, technical skill, reading, modeling, and practice. Authentic learning is not anti-content or anti-teacher. It asks what learners will eventually transfer, apply, defend, adapt, revise, or create with what they know.

Does authentic learning require travel?

No. Every community contains people, places, histories, professions, expertise, ecosystems, institutions, and unanswered questions. Travel can enrich learning, but it is never the price of admission.

Does every experience need to produce external impact?

No. Impact may be internal or external. A learner may develop confidence, judgment, identity, empathy, capability, or purpose. Learning may also inform an audience, serve a community, improve a process, or contribute something useful. The goal is not to manufacture heroic outcomes; it is to make the learning consequential.

Why does the framework apply to educators?

Schools cannot sustainably create agency, connection, meaningful experience, and impact for students while educators experience little of those qualities themselves. The Four Dimensions help institutions examine adult learning and professional life alongside the learner experience.

What is the Authentic Learning Diagnostic?

It is a facilitated, context-sensitive process for examining the Four Dimensions across learners, educators, and institutional systems. It is not an automated score or public checklist. The scope is shaped around the institution’s questions, evidence, and goals.

Can you work with an existing curriculum or school model?

Yes. Many engagements strengthen an existing model rather than replace it. The work may focus on a specific course, program, competency framework, assessment system, grade band, educator experience, or institutional priority.

Do you offer off-the-shelf packages?

Educator products and resources are available for independent use. Institutional work is contextual. Some engagement structures can be standardized, but the recommendations, designs, and implementation choices should respond to the people and place involved.

Can a keynote lead into deeper support?

Yes. A keynote can create shared language and momentum. It can also be paired with a working session, leadership conversation, professional learning, diagnostic, or curriculum engagement.

Do you work internationally?

Yes, when the context and partnership are right. Global experience informs the practice, but the work is not marketed as a travel-dependent model. Local knowledge and local collaborators remain essential.
