A clearer place to begin

See where authentic learning is thriving—and where the experience loses coherence.

The Authentic Learning Diagnostic helps institutions examine the Four Dimensions across learners, educators, and the systems that shape their work. It turns broad aspirations into a focused set of strengths, tensions, and design priorities.

A school is rarely strong or weak in only one way.

You may see strong relationships but limited student agency. Memorable projects may sit at the margins of the curriculum. Community partners may be present without influencing what students learn. Professional development may provide ideas without time or permission to apply them.

The diagnostic creates a fuller picture. It asks how Self, Connection, Experiences, and Impact show up—and how they interact.

What the process examines

Learner experience

Identity, agency, belonging, access to meaningful relationships, application of knowledge, feedback, audience, contribution, and evidence of growth.

Educator experience

Professional identity, judgment, collaboration, meaningful development, experimentation, feedback, support, and visibility of impact.

Institutional conditions

Mission, culture, leadership, curriculum, schedules, assessment, staffing, partnerships, decision-making, resources, and implementation capacity.

A contextual process

The diagnostic is not a public checklist or automated score. The same visible practice can mean different things in different communities. We therefore combine evidence, conversation, artifacts, and lived experience to understand what is happening and why.

Depending on scope, the process may include leadership interviews, educator and learner listening, curriculum and artifact review, observation, workshops, and facilitated sensemaking.

What you receive

  • A clear institutional profile across the Four Dimensions
  • Recognized strengths worth protecting and extending
  • Gaps, contradictions, or uneven experiences requiring attention
  • Priority opportunities connected to institutional goals
  • A facilitated leadership conversation around next decisions
  • Recommended pathways for curriculum, professional learning, system design, or implementation

Insight should lead to a decision.

Some institutions need a focused curriculum redesign. Others need educator learning, stronger partnerships, better assessment, leadership alignment, or a multi-year implementation pathway. The diagnostic does not predetermine the answer. It helps the community choose the right work.
